A New Housing Trend

So, do we need micro units in Westchester County?

A request for proposals for a new model of housing – micro units – was included in a recent real estate initiative in New York City. This was in an effort to meet the housing needs of a rising single adult demographic predicted to increase the city’s population by one million by 2030. (Most young peeople moving from Westchester to begin a search for a suitable home in NYC report very great challenges in finding an affordable place to live.)

Models for the NYC micro units are on display in a new exhibit entitled, Making Room: New Models for Housing New Yorkers which opened on Tuesday January 22 at the Museum of the City of New York. Construction on the winning proposal will start later this year on a city-owned East 27th St. site in Manhattan. The units are designed to optimize space and maximize a feeling of openness in only 250 to 370 square feet.

The need for reasonably priced housing in Westchester comes as no surprise to Realtors looking to find quality homes for empty nesters, singles, newlyweds or young people entering the work force and on their own for the first time. Couldn’t we take a page from NYC’s book and look at micro units here in Westchester?
